Unsafe places for a woman

War and conflict zones: Danger in the shadows

In many war and conflict regions, such as Yemen, Afghanistan and South Sudan, women are confronted with unspeakable acts of violence on a daily basis. Sexual assaults, abductions and forced marriages are tragic realities that characterize the lives of women in these areas. The ongoing instability and violation of human rights often leave women there without protection and support.

Urban centers with high crime rates: dark shadows in lively cities

The crime rate is particularly high in some of the very large cities such as Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Johannesburg in South Africa and Caracas in Venezuela. Women here are increasingly exposed to sexual violence, robberies and other forms of crime. Despite the urban dynamism of these cities, the fear of unsafety remains an everyday companion for many women.

Cultural and social restrictions: Locked in traditions

In certain parts of the Middle East, in some parts of Asia and Africa, and in some communities in India and Pakistan, cultural and societal norms can severely restrict women’s freedom and safety. Forced marriages, honor crimes and restrictive dress codes are just some of the challenges faced by women living in such cultural contexts.

Economic unsafety and discrimination: barriers in the world of work

In many parts of the world, women are discriminated against and underpaid in workplaces because of their gender. This not only leads to economic unsafety, but also makes women more vulnerable to exploitation, sexual harassment and other forms of injustice. Countries with weak economies and a lack of protection mechanisms often present women with significant challenges when it comes to their safety and rights.

Taken together, these examples illustrate that unsafety for women exists all over the world, influenced by a variety of factors, from political conflict and high crime rates to deep-rooted cultural norms and economic discrimination. There remains an urgent need to advocate for the safety and equality of women worldwide.
